How do you assemble a pendant lamp?

By Floris / February 29, 2024

Have you finally scored that beautiful pendant lamp for above your dining table, but don't really know how to hang it? Not everyone is an experienced pendant lamp technician. But with our step-by-step instructions, hanging a pendant lamp will be a piece of cake!

Supplies

To hang your new pendant lamp, it's handy to have some tools on hand. In many cases, just a screwdriver will get you far. We recommend reading through the entire instructions and seeing what tools you need for your situation.

If you don't already own this tool, check out our handy starter kit.

  • A voltage detector
  • A stripper
  • A screwdriver
  • Screws and plugs (are often already included with the lamp)
  • Possibly a impact drill
  • A screwdriver
  • A pencil

Roadmap

  1. Turn off the power
Before you begin hanging your pendant lamp, turn off the power to the group to which the lamp's connection point is connected. Check that there is no current left on the wires with a voltage detector. If the light on the voltage detector is not lit, there is no current left on the wires.

  2. Attach the mounting bracket
Unscrew the mounting bracket from the fixture and screw it to the ceiling using the screw plugs. Depending on the center boxes in your home, you should either screw the mounting bracket to the center box or attach it to the ceiling. In somewhat older houses, the latter is often the case. You will then first have to drill holes in the ceiling to attach the mounting bracket.

  3. Attach the electricity wires to the terminal block
Now we are going to attach the electricity wires. You start by stripping the electricity wires. This means removing the plastic around the wire. Using the stripper, strip 0.5 cm of the brown and blue wire bare. The terminal block has two or three openings. Two of them are for the brown and blue wire. It does not matter which wire is connected where. In the middle is often another opening for the ground wire (the yellow-green wire). If your pendant lamp is grounded, attach this wire to the terminal block as well. Insert the wires into the openings and screw them on with a screwdriver.

  4. Attach the luminaire
Attach the pendant light to the mounting bracket. Usually you do this by tightening the lamp's connection cap to the mounting bracket with two screws on the side.

  5. Screw on the lamp
Screw the bulb of the pendant lamp into the socket. Often no bulb is included with the pendant lamp. The packaging of the pendant lamp will tell you what kind of light source you need. On our website you can find and purchase the right light source. Once you have screwed the light source on, put the power back on the group and check that your lamp works. Voilà, you've hung your pendant lamp yourself!

At what height should you mount a pendant lamp?

The height at which to mount a pendant lamp depends on several factors, including the function of the lamp, the height of the ceiling and the design of the room. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Above a dining table: Hang the pendant lamp at a height where the bottom of the shade or fixture is about 75 to 90 centimeters above the table. This provides adequate lighting without feeling like the lamp is hanging in the way while eating or talking.
  • In a hallway or entryway: If the pendant lamp is used in a hallway or entryway, hang it at a height where the lower part of the lamp hangs at least 2.1 meters above the floor. This prevents people from bumping their heads and provides good lighting for the room.
  • In a living room or bedroom: If the pendant lamp is used for general lighting in a living room or bedroom, hang it at a height where the bottom of the lamp is at eye level when you are standing. This can vary, but generally this height is between 1.6 and 1.8 feet above the floor.
  • Above a countertop or kitchen island: For functional lighting above a countertop or kitchen island, hang the lamp at a height where the bottom of the lamp is about 75 to 90 inches above the surface. This provides adequate lighting while cooking or working.

The final height depends on personal preference. It may be helpful to temporarily adjust the height of the lamp and see how it looks before making a final decision.
