How do you mount surface-mounted spotlights?
By Floris / March 18, 2024
A recessed spotlight is one of the most commonly used recessed lights for general lighting in your home. You can use it to fully illuminate a room, but you can also use it to create a nice atmosphere.
Learn what tools you need and follow the simple steps to properly install your surface-mounted spotlight. Note that because of the often deeper screw holes on surface-mounted spotlights, you may need to use a longer screwdriver attachment.
Supplies
To get this job done easily you need these tools. If you don't already own the basic tools, we recommend you take a look at our handy starter kit:
- A voltage detector
- A stripper
- A screwdriver
- A screwdriver (possibly with a longer attachment)
- Possibly a impact drill
Roadmap
In general, most lamps follow the same step-by-step process. Please note, there can always be exceptions. Review the appropriate instructions for your specific lamp at the bottom of this page.
1. Turn off the power
Start by turning off the power to the group to which you plan to connect the surface-mounted spotlight. Check that there really is no current left on the wires with a voltage detector. If the light on the voltage detector is not lit, there is no more current on the wires.
2. Attach the mounting bracket
Unscrew the mounting bracket from the fixture and screw it to the ceiling with the screw plugs. Depending on the center boxes in your home, you will need to either screw the mounting bracket to the center box or attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling. In older homes, the latter is often the case. You must then first drill holes in the ceiling to attach the mounting bracket.
3. Attach the electrical wires to the terminal block
You're going to strip the electrical wires first. That means removing the plastic around the wire. Using the stripper, strip 0.5 cm of the black and blue wire bare. The terminal block has two or three openings. Two of them are for the black and blue wire. It doesn't matter which one goes where. In most cases, there is another opening in the middle for the ground wire (the yellow-green wire). Insert the wires into the openings and screw them down with a screwdriver.
4. Attach the fixture
Attach the surface-mounted spotlight to the mounting bracket. You usually do this by tightening the lamp's connection cap to the mounting bracket with two screws on the side.
5. Put the bulb in the surface-mounted spotlight
Screw the bulb of the surface-mounted spotlight into the socket. Often no bulb is included with the surface-mounted spot. On the box of the lamp you can find what kind of light source you need. On our website you can find and purchase the right light source. Once you have tightened the light source, put the power back on the group and check that your lamp works. Voilà, you have assembled your surface-mounted spotlight yourself!
