A lamp socket is also called a lamp holder. It is the connection between the lamp (fixture) and the light source, i.e. the part where you turn the light source into the lamp. We have listed the 8 most common lamp sockets for you. Types beginning with the letter E are rotary sockets and types beginning with GU are plug-in socket.
E27
The large, most common rotary socket. The thread / diameter is 27 mm thick and suitable for 230V, i.e. most LED lamps.
E14
The small rotary socket. The thread / diameter is 14 mm thick, and thus suitable for the somewhat smaller LED lamps. Like the E27 lamp socket, it is suitable for 230V. You often see this lamp socket in ambient lighting such as table lamps.
G9
The G9 lamp socket is a plug-in socket with two loops with 9 mm spacing between them. This lamp socket is often found in smaller wall or ceiling lamps.
GU10
This plug-in socket has a bayonet fitting: two pins with 10 mm spacing between them. Light sources with this lamp socket are mainly used for spotlights and are suitable for 230V. The pins are inserted into the holes of the spotlight and the light source is fixed in place with a quarter turn.
GU5.3
These lamp sockets have two small metal pins with 5.3 mm spacing between them that conduct the current. They are also called bipin-foot or plug-in-foot sockets. Light sources with this lamp socket are mainly used in bathrooms, kitchens or outdoors because they are suitable for 12V, which is a safe voltage for wet areas. Please note that you always need a transformer for a 12V light source.
GX53
This plug-in socket has a bayonet fitting with pins spaced 53 mm apart. The lamp is fixed by pressing the light source into the fixture and then turning it a quarter turn. The GX53 lamp socket is mainly used for ceiling lamps.
G53
Many halogen spotlights use a G53 lamp socket. Nowadays, G53 LED spotlights are also available. It is a round lamp socket with pins at the bottom. Only the AR111 light source has a G53 lamp socket. The AR111 light source has a diameter of 111 mm and is mainly used in large surface-mounted and recessed spotlights on 12V. Please note that you always need a transformer for a 12V light source. The light source is fixed by screws or clamps.
Whether a fixture comes with a light source is always indicated in the specifications. When the lamp is delivered without a light source, it's wise to immediately order the right number of light sources. In the specifications, you'll find which light source(s) you need. Make sure that the wattage of the fixture matches the light source.

Functional
With functional light, you always have sufficient lighting. Functional lighting is useful in spaces where you want to see well. Think of the kitchen or bathroom, but also in a home office, you don't want to sit in the dark.

You don't read in the dark. By choosing this type of light, you're sure that you won't have to put your book away. So, choose one of these lamps when this is the purpose of your lighting.
Ambiance
Ambient lighting creates coziness in your interior. This type of lighting gives a warm feeling in the house. Ideal for, say, the bedroom. Set the right mood with this type of lamps.
Direct light
Direct light comes straight from the light source and can therefore illuminate your entire surface. Direct light is mainly directed downwards and shines directly into the space. Direct light is handy when you want to perform a task.
Indirect light

The built-in dimensions of a spotlight concern the part that is recessed into the ceiling. This diameter and depth differ from the general dimensions because this part is out of sight when it is installed. Make sure your ceiling is deep enough for the depth of the spotlight, otherwise it will not be fully recessed into the ceiling.
The number of light points on a lamp indicates how many separate light sources the lamp contains. This directly affects the amount of light and the light distribution in a room.
Application and benefits:
When choosing a lamp, it is important to consider the number of light points to ensure sufficient light for the room and application.
The wattage of a lamp generally indicates the power needed to operate LED lighting. It has nothing to do with brightness, which is expressed in lumens. A lower wattage means a more energy-efficient lamp. Do you want to be sure your lamp is energy efficient? Then also check the energy label.
The exact meaning of wattage varies slightly depending on the type of lamp:
The total number of lumens indicates the brightness of a lamp. You adjust the number of lumens based on the size and function of the room. To help you out, here's an estimate of lumens per square meter for various rooms in your house.

The number of lumens for a lamp can be found in the product description and specifications. This ranges from 55 lumens to 3300 lumens.
The number of opburning hours indicates how long the lighting will last before you need to replace it. LED lamps generally last the longest: between 20,000 and 50,000 operating hours. Keep in mind that the lifespan depends on usage and environment.
The term Kelvin (K) refers to the color temperature of the light emitted by the lamp, and sometimes also to the color characteristics of the light itself. This affects the ambiance and functionality of the illuminated space. The Kelvin rating determines whether the light is warm, neutral, or cool.
Up to 2700K: Extra Warm White Light
2700K - 3000K: Warm White
3001K - 4000K: Neutral White
More than 4000K: Cool White

CRI stands for Color Rendering Index, which indicates the quality of color representation from a light source. The higher the CRI, the better the lighting displays true colors. This is measured on a scale from 1 to 100. A CRI of 100 is equivalent to daylight. A low CRI can result in poor color rendition. At lampandlight, we mostly work with a CRI of 80. A CRI of 90 is typically seen in commercial lighting like fluorescent tubes.
Completely recessed means that the lamp is completely integrated into the surface it is installed in, such as a ceiling or wall. The lamp does not protrude and is flush with the surface, creating a clean, minimalist look.
Low installation depth refers to the limited depth needed to install the lamp. This means that the lamp requires little space behind the surface it is embedded into. You can find the installation depth in the fixture's manual. Lamps with low installation depth are ideal for places where space is limited, such as shallow ceilings or walls. This allows for the installation of lighting without requiring much space behind the mounting surface, resulting in a sleek and tidy finish in the interior.
A rechargeable lamp doesn't require a nearby power source. Charge the lamp sufficiently and place the lighting wherever you want in your home. You can also easily carry these lamps. The specifications indicate how you can recharge the lamp. Often, this is done using a USB-C to USB-C cable.
Battery life in hours refers to the amount of time the lamp can remain illuminated on a fully charged battery. This indicates how long the lamp can be used before the battery needs to be recharged.
