A lamp socket is also called a lamp holder. It is the connection between the lamp (fixture) and the light source, i.e. the part where you turn the light source into the lamp. We have listed the 8 most common lamp sockets for you. Types beginning with the letter E are rotary sockets and types beginning with GU are plug-in socket.
E27
The large, most common rotary socket. The thread / diameter is 27 mm thick and suitable for 230V, i.e. most LED lamps.
E14
The small rotary socket. The thread / diameter is 14 mm thick, and thus suitable for the somewhat smaller LED lamps. Like the E27 lamp socket, it is suitable for 230V. You often see this lamp socket in ambient lighting such as table lamps.
G9
The G9 lamp socket is a plug-in socket with two loops with 9 mm spacing between them. This lamp socket is often found in smaller wall or ceiling lamps.
GU10
This plug-in socket has a bayonet fitting: two pins with 10 mm spacing between them. Light sources with this lamp socket are mainly used for spotlights and are suitable for 230V. The pins are inserted into the holes of the spotlight and the light source is fixed in place with a quarter turn.
GU5.3
These lamp sockets have two small metal pins with 5.3 mm spacing between them that conduct the current. They are also called bipin-foot or plug-in-foot sockets. Light sources with this lamp socket are mainly used in bathrooms, kitchens or outdoors because they are suitable for 12V, which is a safe voltage for wet areas. Please note that you always need a transformer for a 12V light source.
GX53
This plug-in socket has a bayonet fitting with pins spaced 53 mm apart. The lamp is fixed by pressing the light source into the fixture and then turning it a quarter turn. The GX53 lamp socket is mainly used for ceiling lamps.
G53
Many halogen spotlights use a G53 lamp socket. Nowadays, G53 LED spotlights are also available. It is a round lamp socket with pins at the bottom. Only the AR111 light source has a G53 lamp socket. The AR111 light source has a diameter of 111 mm and is mainly used in large surface-mounted and recessed spotlights on 12V. Please note that you always need a transformer for a 12V light source. The light source is fixed by screws or clamps.
The energy label of a product indicates how energy-efficient a product is with electricity. The energy labels run from A (dark green) to G (dark red), where lamps with energy label A are the most efficient and those with label G are the least efficient. You can find the energy label under specifications - light source.
Since the implementation of the new strict requirements for energy labels in September 2021, light sources have been given a relatively low energy rating. E, F and G are usually the energy labels that light sources are given, but they are just as economical as A, A+ or A++ used to be.
The energy consumption is shown at the bottom of the energy label on the product packaging. This is shown in kWh per 1000 hours. LED lights are often the most energy efficient light bulbs available.
The wattage of a lamp generally indicates the power needed to operate LED lighting. It has nothing to do with brightness, which is expressed in lumens. A lower wattage means a more energy-efficient lamp. Do you want to be sure your lamp is energy efficient? Then also check the energy label.
The exact meaning of wattage varies slightly depending on the type of lamp:
The total number of lumens indicates the brightness of a lamp. You adjust the number of lumens based on the size and function of the room. To help you out, here's an estimate of lumens per square meter for various rooms in your house.

The number of lumens for a lamp can be found in the product description and specifications. This ranges from 55 lumens to 3300 lumens.
The number of opburning hours indicates how long the lighting will last before you need to replace it. LED lamps generally last the longest: between 20,000 and 50,000 operating hours. Keep in mind that the lifespan depends on usage and environment.
The term Kelvin (K) refers to the color temperature of the light emitted by the lamp, and sometimes also to the color characteristics of the light itself. This affects the ambiance and functionality of the illuminated space. The Kelvin rating determines whether the light is warm, neutral, or cool.

CRI stands for Color Rendering Index, which indicates the quality of color representation from a light source. The higher the CRI, the better the lighting displays true colors. This is measured on a scale from 1 to 100. A CRI of 100 is equivalent to daylight. A low CRI can result in poor color rendition. At lampandlight, we mostly work with a CRI of 80. A CRI of 90 is typically seen in commercial lighting like fluorescent tubes.
The number of volts for a light represents the required supply voltage. The standard power supplied to the home is 220/230 volts. Almost all lights in our range can be connected to your mains power. There are a few exceptions, however (12 volts). For each product, the voltage is given in the specifications, under ""light source"". These lights require a transformer to convert the current from 220/230 volts to 12 volts. You cannot simply connect these lights to your mains without a transformer, as this will destroy the light source or fixture.
EAN stands for "European Article Number." It is a unique identification number used to label products in retail. This number aids in efficiently managing inventory, sales, and logistics. Each EAN number contains information such as the country of origin, the manufacturer, and a unique product number, making it easy to scan and trace products.

Clear:
Clear glass generally provides a direct and unobstructed lighting effect. The glass is transparent, allowing the light from the lamp to shine freely through the glass without much scattering or change in light color.
Frosted:
Frosted glass creates a soft and diffuse lighting effect. The light is more evenly spread and appears less intense than with clear glass. This provides subtle and enveloping lighting.
Amber:
Amber glass creates a warm and cozy lighting effect. The glass has a warm, golden to orange tint that colors the light shining through it. This results in a soft and muted light with a warm glow.
Rose:
Rose glass provides a subtle and warm lighting effect. The glass has a gentle pink, copper-like tint that subtly colors the light. This promotes a warm and soothing atmosphere.
Smoke:
Smoke glass creates a diffuse and muted lighting effect. Smoke glass, also known as smoked glass, has a dark or tinted color that softens and disperses the light shining through it. This provides subtle and restrained lighting compared to clear glass.
Gold:
Gold glass creates a warm and luxurious lighting effect. The glass has a metallic or reflective finish that uniquely reflects the light, giving the surroundings a warm, golden glow. This provides elegant and atmospheric lighting.
Blue:
Blue glass makes the light slightly cooler. The glass filters out warmer colors from the light, creating a cool, bluish glow.
Green:
Green glass creates a calm and natural lighting effect. The glass filters the light, creating a soft green glow.
Opal glass creates a soft and diffuse lighting effect. The milky and opaque glass evenly distributes the light without sharp shadows or glare. This provides calm and atmospheric indirect lighting.
Mirror:
A lamp with a mirror cap creates a directed and concentrated lighting effect. This type of lamp has a reflector on the top of the light source that reflects the light back to the fitting.
Phase cutting regulates how dimmers send electrical current to lamps. It's important to use a dimmer that works well with your lamps. Not all dimmers work with all types of lamps. Using the wrong dimmer for your light source can result in flickering, buzzing, or even damage to the lamp or the dimmer. This can also shorten the lifespan of the lamp.
Ensure that the dimmer and the lamps work well together by checking if they are compatible. Look on the dimmer's packaging or the manufacturer's website to confirm their compatibility, and review the specifications of the lamps to see which type of dimmer is recommended. Smart light sources can be dimmed via your smart device and therefore do not require a dimmer. This way, you achieve the desired dimming effect without any issues.
